Manager of Manchester United for twenty-three years, Sir Matt Busby was and remains one of soccer’s most respected and influential figures. The phenomenal success of the team he created brought both club and manager international fame at the top of the world’s most competitive professional game. This is Matt Busby’s own story of his life in football and what it has meant to be manager of the best-known football club in the world. His involvement with United began just after the Second World War. He describes vividly the ups and downs of those early years, followed by the triumphs of the `Busby babes’. Then came tragedy when eight of the players were killed in an air crash at Munich. Busby himself was injured almost fatally and his team virtually destroyed. Miraculously, through the sixties Manchester United was rebuilt until, in 1968, Sir Matt achieved his greatest triumph when United became the first, and as yet the only, English club to win the European Cup.
